For our Energy from Waste projects, we recognise that despite the sector emitting ~1% of the UK emissions, our projects will need to be compliant with the UK’s carbon budgets.
EFW presents a substantial opportunity for emission reduction by diverting waste from landfill to a process which can capture and use the waste for baseload electricity production subsequently displacing fossil fuel extraction and supporting the intermittent renewable energy sector.
By 2040 the waste sector must have emission reductions to 16 MtCO₂e, which is further reduced to 7.8 MtCO₂/e by 2050. This pressure will be felt most by the landfill, wastewater sectors who make up the most consumption of the waste sector carbon budget.
To achieve this reduction Sesona is including the option for carbon capture technology on new concept EfW development stage projects. By reducing our carbon budget consumption, we are future proofing our projects and creating an energy business which will achieve a sustainable long term footprint in an evolving market.
